Floods affect over 10,000 families in Maguindanao del Sur

COTABATO CITY, BARMM, Philippines — Floods from the southwest monsoon have impacted 10,024 families in two towns of Maguindanao del Sur, affecting an estimated 50,000 individuals, according to a disaster official.

Ameer Jehad ‘Tim’ Ambolodto, Maguindanao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) Officer, reported that 12 villages in Pagalungan town were submerged, affecting over 6,600 families. In nearby Datu Montawal, 11 barangays were flooded, affecting 3,332 households due to a sudden rise in water levels.

Both towns have historically experienced flooding during the rainy season as they are in the catchment area of the Mindanao river basin.

Despite the flash floods, no casualties or evacuations were reported. The provincial government distributed food packs to the affected families.

Ambolodto stressed the importance of monitoring and following early warning signals, especially in flash-flood prone areas. He urged the public to cooperate with disaster risk reduction and management offices for easier rescue missions if the situation worsens.
