Communities near Sipalay River, Negros Occidental that are prone to flooding are now protected by a new revetment wall constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The 420-lineal meter revetment wall built in the amount of P54.75 million now protects residents of Barangays Gil Montilla, Nauhang, and Mamboroto from water overflow during heavy rains and other calamities.
DPWH Regional Office 6 Director Nerie Bueno explained that the project covers the construction of a revetment wall with hand-laid rock embankment resting on steel sheet pile foundations, capped with structural concrete.
“Besides protecting local communities from perennial flooding, the disaster-resilient structure will also mitigate soil erosion along the riverbank that may damage properties and farmlands in the area, thereby opening opportunities for livelihood improvement,” said Director Bueno.
The project funded under the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA) was undertaken by DPWH Negros Occidental 3rd District Engineering Office.
