DICT, Google to Award Cybersecurity Scholarships to Government Workers

Google Philippines, in coordination with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), is set to award 500 Cybersecurity Career Certificate scholarships to qualified government workers and DICT employees, providing them with the necessary skills set to identify and mitigate common cybersecurity risks, threats and vulnerabilities.

Through the 3–6-month self-paced program, qualified government workers and Department employees will be able to acquire the skills for an entry-level job in cybersecurity even without prior experience.

“The Cybersecurity Google Career Certificate will help in the upskilling of the Filipino workforce to be globally competitive. This will also equip them with the skills needed to have resilience against cyber attacks and to build a safer and more secure online world. The DICT thanks Google for this generous effort in helping the Philippines in its digital transformation journey and looks forward to more opportunities for cooperation,” said DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy.

The ICT Literacy and Competency Development Bureau (ILCDB) is responsible for the evaluation, nomination, distribution, and monitoring of these accounts to qualified recipients of Google Career Certificate (GCC) Scholarship in cooperation with the DICT Regional Offices.

According to the Workforce Study made by the International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2), there is a gap of 3.4 million cybersecurity workers worldwide. Currently, the Philippines has only 202 cybersecurity professionals holding Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification.

“Creating more pathways for Filipinos to acquire the right digital skills and to competitively enter the cybersecurity field is essential. Google is deeply committed to working closely with our local partners across the public and private sectors to help develop the next generation of cybersecurity workforce and experts in the country,” said Bernadette Nacario, Country Director of Google Philippines.
