DICT Brings ICT Literacy Closer To The Manide Tribe

65 Indigenous People (IPs) from the Manide Tribe in Camarines Norte, Bicol learned the fundamentals of computer technology concepts, the internet, and primary computer navigation in a training course conducted by the DICT- Technology for Education, Employment, Entrepreneurs, and Economic Development (Tech4ED) Program at the Camarines Norte Provincial Library from August-September 2022.

The hands-on face-to-face training utilized a lecture approach coupled with engaging computer exercises anchored on the goal of molding participants into responsible digital citizens. The training was divided into three batches spread on different dates to optimize the equipment available and provide more focused sessions with the attendees.

“Isa sa mga nais tugunan ng aming ahensya sa pamamagitan ng Digital Literacy Training ay ang digital equity o access sa teknolohiya ng impormasyon na kinakailangan para sa ganap na pakikipag ugnayan sa ating lipunan, demokrasya, at ekonomiya.” OIC Regional Director, DICT Region V Dir. Carmela P. Valencia said.

The participants from the Manide Tribe were able to see the benefits and opportunities that await them in cyberspace. The specific topics covered during the training course include Internet Definition, Types of Websites, Threats on the Internet, Safe Use of the Internet, Internet Etiquette, and Navigating the Internet.

According to the Oxford Internet Survey (OxIS), functional literacy is substantially correlated with both general internet use and looking up public information online. Internet literacy can lead to more capabilities to benefit from the advantages of the Internet. The training course was in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples – Camarines Norte and Camarines Norte Provincial Library.
