DENR Secretary Loyzaga and UK Minister of State Goldsmith at COP 15

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga meets with the United Kingdom Minister of State for Overseas Territories, Commonwealth, Energy, Climate and Environment Rt Hon Lord Zach Goldsmith during the UN Biodiversity Conference COP 15 in Montreal on December 15.

Secretary Loyzaga was a speaker at the High Level Panel: Financing delivery of the Global Biodiversity Framework – Session 3: Domestic resource mobilisation and aligning government investment where she shared that the Philippines has started the creation of a national natural resource geospatial database, a climate change tagging system, and the potential development of a biodiversity credit market.

Loyzaga also emphasized that the country’s urgent need for nature financing are in the protection and restoration of its natural resources. Loyzaga and Goldsmith first met during the COP 27 in Egypt in November to discuss how the UK can provide financing assistance to the Philippines through the Blue Planet Fund. The Environment Secretary was the designated representative of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and Head of the Philippine Delegation to COP15 which brought 196 countries with the aim to protect nature and stop biodiversity loss.
