A 68-Year-Old Boracay Sea Urchin Diver Finds New Hope with Support from Sam Verzosa

MANILA, Philippines – Luisa Gomboc, a 68-year-old Boracay native known for diving for sea urchins, has received a newfound sense of hope and support during the challenges brought by the pandemic.

Due to pandemic restrictions, Luisa was unable to continue her previous job as a beachfront masseuse. Facing these limitations, she turned to diving for sea urchins as a way to sustain herself and maintain her health through regular swimming.

Recognizing Luisa’s resilience and unique work, Sam “SV” Verzosa offered his support. Luisa shared her expertise with Verzosa, teaching him how to gather sea urchins from rocks under the sea. During times when sea urchins were not available, Luisa supplemented her income by selling “kangkong.”

To assist Luisa, Verzosa provided her with a “kabuhayan package” that included a complete rice business setup with essentials like a weighing scale and sacks of rice. Additionally, Luisa received a grocery package, a TV, an electric fan, and a mattress to enhance her home and living conditions.

Verzosa expressed admiration for Luisa’s determination and dedication, highlighting how she sought ways to earn a living despite losing her source of income during the pandemic.
